As we start our journey to pray for the peoples of Vietnam, many of us know only a few things about Vietnam and its people. Here are a few fun facts to help you learn more:
1. Communism.
Vietnam is a communist nation. The official name is the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
2. Growing nation.
Although Vietnam is a developing country, the unemployment rates are very low and the literacy rate is at 94 percent.
3. Bikes, bikes, and more bikes.
Traveling by motorbike is one of the most popular forms of transportation. An estimated 10 million motorbikes travel on the roads of Vietnam every single day.
4. Former French colony.
Vietnam was once under French control. Communists defeated French forces in 1954 and gained independence.
5. Nuts and rice.
The world’s largest supply of cashews comes from Vietnam. It is also the second largest exporter of rice.
6. Tonally speaking.
The Vietnamese language has six different tones and is thus one of the hardest languages to learn.
7. Once divided.
After Vietnam gained freedom from French control, the country split in two—the communist North and anti-communist South. Today the country is united under communist rule.
8. Hostile to Christ.
Christians face a high level of persecution in Vietnam. It is listed as #16 on the Open Doors World Watch List for persecution of Christians, ahead of its communist neighbor, China.
